Sensory differences in young people

autism conferenceWe have been looking at the sensory differences of young people with autism and how this affects them at school, college and in the workplace. Recent research by Lorna Jane King in the US looks into the benefits of sensory integration therapy which addresses issues with the vestibular, proprioceptive and tactile areas in particular. These senses are important as they have such large areas of input. She also looked at ‘auditory integration training’ which addresses sound sensitivities; the findings looked promising for increasing language and decreasing reactions to sound.

There is increasing interest and understanding of this important area and we are helping schools devlop their strategies around this subject. Further to this we recently took the stage at the Autism Conference on 6th November in a question and answer session on this very subject.
